After   three   years   in   the   drawer,   Den   Sjungande   Julgranen   finally   got   its   big   break   in   2004   when Pernilla   Warberg   (one   of   Gothenburg's   best   sources   for   "making   something   happen")   saw   an opportunity     for     the     production     to     be     featured     in     "Julstaden     Göteborg"     (Christmas     in Gothenburg),   an   event   conceived   of   by   Leif   Nilsson,   the   vice   VD   of   Göteborg   &   Co.   The   event   was supported   by   local   sponsors   and   slated   to   run   annually   for   three   years   with   an   aim   to   increase tourism   and   cheer   up   Gothenburgians   and   their   Nordic   neighbors.   The   arrangers   for   Julstaden Göteborg   loved   the   idea   of   a   "singing   Christmas   tree"   and   bought   the   production   from   Amy   and Pehr and hired Amy as the Artistic Director.
Den    sjungande    julgranen    (pronounced:    den    shoong-an-deh    yule-grah-nen)    “the    singing    Christmas    tree”,        is    one    of Gothenburg's    most    popular    outdoor    musical    attractions    presented    during    the    city's    annual    Christmas    event:    "Julstaden Göteborg".   Thanks   to   its   sponsors,   the   event   is   free   to   the   public   and   features   some   of   the   city’s   best   local   choirs   performing   a wide   range   of   international   holiday   favorites.      Amy   Elizabeth   Wheeler ,    the   production's   artistic   director,   works   closely   with choirs, musicians and the production team to deliver holiday cheer year after year. As   an   original   choir   member    in   "The   South   Street   Seaport   Singing   Christmas   Tree"   in   New   York   City   (back   in   the   ‘80’s),   Amy thought   a   similar   production   could   be   successful   in   Gothenburg .   So   in   2001,   Amy   presented   the   idea   of   a   singing   Christmas tree   to   Pehr   Sandström   (then   in   charge   of   special   effects   and   set-building   at   Göteborgs   Operan)   who   thought   it   was   a   terrific idea and immediately made drawings for the scaffolding and constructed a model.
The   scaffolding   was   welded   together   by   Nordsvets   AB   and   The   Lodola   Choir   (Lodolakören)      conducted   by   Thomas   Lagerberg was   the   debut   choir.   The   premier   was   a   success   thanks   to   the   warm   hearts   of   Gothenburg   and   the   wonderful   performances   by Lodola.    Since    then,    Den    Sjungande    Julgranen     has    enjoyed    nine    seasons    in    Bältespännarparken,    three    seasons    at Drottningtorget in front of the Clarion Hotel Post, and in 2016 moved to Kungsportsplatsen .
Our   choirs   and   musicians   that   perform in    Den    sjungande    julgranen    are    the heart   and   soul   of   this   production.   Rain or   shine,   blustery   or   balmy,   their   voices ring   out   gathering   audiences   together and   spreading   holiday   cheer   year   after year.    A    heart-felt    thank    you    to    them, Julstaden Göteborg, and our sponsors .
Per Sandström and Amy Elizabeth Wheeler
Den   sjungande   julgranen   takes   great   pleasure   in   being   part   of   Julstaden   Göteborg   and   the   choirs   and   production   team hope   that   2016   has   delighted   audiences   as   it   has   for   the   past   twelve   seasons.   Many   thanks   to   Lodolakören   and Thomas   Lagerberg.   Special   thanks   to   Maria   Drott,   Pernilla   Warberg,   Mikael   Isacson,   G öteborg   &   Co ,      and   Julstaden's generous sponsors for making this production possible.
